Invasive Group A Streptococcal (iGAS) is a fast progressing disease with a mortality rate of 10-50%. iGAS is a reportable disease under the Health and Protection and Promotion Act. As such, Public Health Units are responsible for investigating and controlling outbreaks of iGAS disease. iGAS was declared an outbreak in June 2016 in Middlesex-London.
Clinical features of iGAS include, but are not limited to, wound infection and/or cellulitis, necrotizing fasciitis and other soft tissue necrosis. iGAS can be managed through monitoring and surveillance, personal protective measures, early detection , prophylaxis and treatment, housing, and sanitation.
